Radiant Flooring - Slab Pouring

David and Nick (professional plumber) worked on laying our radiant tubing on Friday so we could pour the slab on Tuesday (5/20). Dad, David, and I laid all the blue board insulation down at night (several nights). We also had to dig into the gravel to create a thickened slab for load bearing walls (see space below). We didn't get any pictures of the gravel truck and shooter, but sufice to say we loved the shooter truck! We didn't have to rake any gravel!! We just had to make sure it was to grade and of course dig out where the thicken slab would be, but I remember many a days in my younger years....raking and shoveling gravel until I didn't want to see any more rocks!
Here you can see the radiant tubing that will heat our basement. 4" of concrete will go on top of the tubing. The blue board insulation is to make sure the heat goes up into the concrete instead of being lost into the ground (very inefficient).
This is where the mechanical room will be. We will have a hot water heat through the tubing and a boiler mate for hot water for the rest of the house. Our boiler will actually be attached to the wall.

Here is the DCI crew pouring the slab and doing all the flat work. It was amazing to watch them work.


Here you can see the black tube coming from above - that is the pump truck for the concrete. The operator (not pictured) stands down next to the crew and operates the pump. He cuts it off when they don't need any more mud and slows it down or speeds it up. It's quite amazing actually.


Payton was really excited to see the slab being poured!

The finished product - even though we really didn't help with the slab work we still put our hand prints in it!

Here's the guys doing the finish work - this slab was poured just hours before they were out there working on it - still soft, but solid enough to hold them. Later that same day they saw cut relief joints into the slab in several places...this will try to control where it cracks.
